Amy Klobuchar hasn't averaged at more than about 4% nationally for the entirety of the Democratic primary. It's possible that front-runner Joe Biden has a strong showing in Iowa and New Hampshire, shutting the rest of the moderates out of the primary. In that case, he could have things wrapped up by Super Tuesday.
But, although Biden hasn't cratered nationally, he's stagnated in Iowa and sunk somewhat in New Hampshire. The chance for the much-awaited Klobuchar boom may finally be here, and the polls are creeping up in her favor.
The Minnesota senator's polling average in Iowa has more than tripled in the past three months, to more than 9%, and in New Hampshire, it's more than doubled to 7%. Even more importantly, Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg have slightly fallen in that same time frame. If Klobuchar overperforms in those early two states, beating Warren (or, less likely, Buttigieg) in either or both, she could undercut the core of Biden's candidacy: electability.
The best case for Biden's candidacy is that he's uniquely positioned to reclaim the Rust Belt and most capable of beating President Trump in the Electoral College. Although her still-limited name recognition has hindered her head-to-head polling against Trump, it's easy to see why a Democrat who repeatedly wins reelection in the double digits in a state Hillary Clinton won by a single point would fare well against Trump in crucial Midwest states. Klobuchar is clearly electable, but she hasn't yet proven that she can win a primary.
If Klobuchar overperforms and Biden underperforms in early states, centrists could turn their attention to her. It's not the most likely scenario, but at this point, it's possible. That's more than what most would have said about Klobuchar's campaign just a few months ago.
