CDC: San Diego suspected coronavirus case tests negative - The San Diego Union-Tribune

On a day when authorities declared novel coronavirus an international public health emergency and confirmed that it has now been transmitted inside the United States, San Diego got a little good news.

Thursday evening, the county health department said in a short statement that the test results for the region’s lone suspected case of the deadly respiratory disease came back negative.

It’s a result that many have awaited since county officials told the public on Monday that specimens had been sent to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention labs in Atlanta for testing. The county has said as little as possible about the specific circumstances of the person involved, only noting that he or she is no longer hospitalized and currently experiencing no symptoms.

The World Health Organization declared the current epidemic, which has now killed 170 people and infected more than 7,700 worldwide, an international health emergency Thursday, but Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said in an email that the action will not cause any immediate change in local public health actions. The local medical community is already on the lookout for possible cases, routinely asking anyone with possible symptoms if they’ve recently traveled to China and isolating anyone who says they have.
