UTICA N.Y. -- The new Parkway Ice Rink is having their soft opening today on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
The new ice rink will be at the Roscoe Conklin Park and is still under construction.
For the holidays, members of the public are allowed to skate for free these next two days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you are in need of some skates, they have you covered. You can rent a pair of skates for $7.
The ice rink is expected to be completed by the end of January.
The new facility will have lights, bleachers, seating lights, and a chiller to have ice be made in temperatures up to 50 degrees.
During the warmer months, this area will be turned into pickleball courts for the spring and summer.
This brand-new facility was funded with money from the American Rescue Plan Act. This is a part of outgoing Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri's vision for Memorial Parkway being a four season destination.
"I think what we have here is that it is bringing some of the past of the skating rink that was once up here and is in the future of the growth of the city. It is nice blending a lot of memories a lot of people have, and now we are able to create memories for the next generations and people that are going to use the facilities we have along the parkway," he said.
Permanent hours for the ice rink will be made by the new administration in Utica.
