BAY CITY, MI — For Chloë Cerva, owner of Pretzel Prize, baking and running a small business is more than a source of income; it’s a source of happiness.

“It gives me so much joy and warmth just sharing food with people and seeing how excited they get,” said Cerva, 32, who brought her hand-rolled soft pretzel business to Bay City last year. “For me, it’s like an art. I try to make each box of pretzels beautiful.”

Earlier in the pandemic, when Cerva was between jobs, she passed the time by baking in her home kitchen. The Freeland native was living in Portland, where she had primarily worked in the restaurant and bar industries, both of which were hard hit by the pandemic. One morning, she woke up early with a plan to make soft pretzels for some friends. They loved them so much, the next day, people started calling to place orders for more.

And that, Cerva said, is how she “accidentally started a small business.”

“I couldn’t find a job anywhere in Portland at that time, and suddenly I was making enough money for rent,” she recalled. “I started this not really thinking much of it, and now it’s like a little dream come true.”

Cerva, who has since moved back to Michigan, found a new customer base in Bay City. She accepts pretzel orders online and offers occasional pop-ups at small businesses, including Harless + Hugh Coffee and Tri-City Brewing Co. She also accepts larger orders for special events, such as weddings, baby showers and graduation parties. Photos of her sweet and savory hand-rolled pretzels topped with jalapeno and cheddar, flaky sea salt and butter, cinnamon sugar, everything seasoning, and sesame seeds and garlic can be found on her Instagram and Facebook pages.

“I just like the plain ones, personally, because the flavor of the bread itself is pretty beautiful,” Cerva said. “But I do like the jalapeno cheddar. I think it’s a fan favorite.”

Cerva said she uses the best ingredients she can find and puts a lot of care into her products.

“I think food should be really fun, and I’m just excited to give people fun food to eat and share,” she said.
