“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” opened around much of the world this weekend and this third installment in the “Harry Potter” spinoff series isn’t doing the sort of numbers the studio wants.
Over the weekend the film is pulling in a lacklustre $43 million in North America, and internationally it’s headed for $71.7 million from 66 foreign markets. Combined with further box-office from its debut last weekend in 28 territories, the film has collected $193.4 million to date globally after ten days.
The trouble is the film carries a huge $200 million production budget and large marketing spend, the same as the last two films. Those movies made $814 million globally and $650 million globally respectively, with the latter seen as a major disappointment at the time.
The previous films made nearly 75% of revenues from foreign sales, but with no openings in Russia and a soft start in China it faces a major uphill struggle. Right now it’s unclear if the prequel saga will complete its ambitions of a five-film franchise.
This is a long way from Warners’ “The Batman” which opened early last month to a global opening weekend of $258 million and has now passed the $750 million mark – making it 2022’s biggest film to date. That film’s box-office is expected to take a hit domestically as the movie is set to debut tomorrow on HBO Max.
