Stuck in neutral? Consumers gravitate toward soft tones, plus blue - www.designerstoday.com

Soothing neutral tones and a pop of blue were the hues most incorporated into home décor by consumers in 2021, according to a Furniture Today survey.

More than one-third of all respondents and nearly half of those from the Gen Z demographic showed a strong affinity for adding shades of blue and gray throughout their living spaces, followed by neutral whites and beiges.

In a Fixr report on paint and color trends for 2022, blue stood out for some very specific uses, with 22% selecting royal blue for front doors, 12% picking soft blue for a bedroom, and 28% and 12%, respectively, choosing navy for the bedroom and living room.

Meanwhile shades of gray were listed by 14% as the best interior colors for selling a house by the panel of interior designers.

The Fixr report also noted that ahead of painting a room (42%), adding color through textiles (55%) was considered the No. 1 way to bring new color into a home in 2022. Other popular options for introducing a new palette were wallpapering a room (39%) and creating two-toned kitchen cabinets (34%).

In the Furniture Today survey, 17% of all respondents conceded that they added no new colors to their home in 2021. This was most true for one-fourth of Baby Boomers, while just 6% of Millennials opted to eschew new hues.

Orange was the least likely color to be added, respondents said, falling just below pink. However, Gen Z and Millennials embraced pink at a much higher rate than did older consumers, with Gen Z putting it ahead of both purple and yellow as their color of choice.
