AKRON, Ohio – Twisted Tomato Pizzeria and Beer Wall will hold a soft opening for its second location the week of Oct. 11 at 325 S. Main St. in Downtown Akron across from Canal Park.

Though the restaurant will serve pizza and beer, Twisted Tomato is not a standard pizzeria. The restaurant’s slogan, “If it’s pizza it’s possible,” is a nod to the restaurant’s anything-can-go-on-pizza philosophy.

Twisted Tomato owner Brad Bober’s first foray into owning a pizzeria came when he purchased the Guy’s Pizza at 1909 Bailey Rd. in Cuyahoga Falls in 2017, which was ironic, Bober said, because it was the first pizza place he ever worked at.

“Even though I left the industry to become an automotive technician, after five years of that I was over it. I randomly went in to buy some pizza, bread and wings from Guy’s Pizza, and they were telling me it was for sale so I bought it,” he said.

Bober, 31, describes food as “something that I just naturally love to do.”

After running the pizzeria successfully as a Guy’s franchise for two years, Bober decided it was time to come up with his own ideas and Twisted Tomato Pizzeria was born.

“Ever since we opened as Twisted Tomato Pizzeria two years ago we have been just absolutely insanely busy,” he said.

When Bober, a North Akron resident, heard about an opportunity to open up a location on Main Street across from Canal Park, he knew it was time to expand.

“We’re right across from where the Akron RubberDucks play. It’s a prime location for pizza and beer, the best combo next to peanut butter and jelly,” Bober said. “To be Downtown right now, right after the Main Street construction and seeing all these people walking around, it’s going to be amazing.”

Bober and his business partner, Chris Sedlock, who are both of Italian descent, looked at different types of beer walls for the pizzeria before deciding which type of wall was best for the space. The chosen beer wall features 36 taps and will allow customers to purchase cards to dispense their own beers of up to 32 ounces. Half of the taps will feature local and craft beer varieties. Additional taps will offer wine, mixed drinks and microbrews, Bober said.

Bober describes the atmosphere of the 2,500-square-foot space as having a traditional Italian feel with a hip and fun twist. The family-friendly space features custom wall graphics and has seating for approximately 70.

“We have a little bit of something for everyone,” he said.

Pizzas on the menu range from traditional favorites to unusual creations, with different specialty pies rolled out each month.

“We do a lot of different creations that others probably wouldn’t normally do. For instance, the pizza of the month for October is a pumpkin pizza,” he said. “It’s probably one of my top selling pizzas for the month.”

Menu offerings will include traditional Italian favorites such as stuffed peppers and stuffed shells. New menu offerings that will be available at the Downtown Akron location will include stuffed tomatoes, bangin’ bourbon shrimp, a meatball chomp box, and a whole new line of grilled cheese sandwiches dubbed “meltdowns.” Also on the menu is an apple bacon salad and pizza creations including a twisted Philly steak pizza, an all-cheese pizza with chopped-up mozzarella cheese, pickle pizza and spaghetti pizza.

Twisted Tomato is something of a family affair for Bober, who employs his mom, his siblings and his cousin.

“For all of my employees who put in all the hard work during COVID, for the ones who have stayed during being short staffed—I feel blessed I have the people by my side that I do,” he said.

When the Akron location gets going, Bober expects to employ 15-20 people at the pizzeria, which will include delivery workers. He is still looking to hire hosts and servers.

For next week, Bober will accept DoorDash orders and then hold a soft opening. He plans to accept delivery orders in the near future.

“It’s going to be a big party here. We’re excited to bring this to downtown Akron,” he said.

Regular hours will be from 10 a.m. to midnight daily. Orders can be placed on the Twisted Tomato website or by calling 330-849-5707.
