Nearly 100 new COVID-19 cases in Mecosta County over weekend - The Pioneer

MECOSTA COUNTY — Almost 100 new cases of COVID-19 were identified in Mecosta County over the weekend.

The District Health Department No. 10 reports 94 new cases between Saturday, Oct. 2, and Monday, Oct. 4, bringing the total number of cases to 3,898, as of Monday, Oct. 4. Of those individuals who have tested positive since March 2020, 3,200 have recovered, 37 have died and 661 remain active, according to DHD No. 10's weekly COVID-19 update.

Mecosta County had 177 new cases last week, defined as Sept. 26 through Oct. 2, with the highest one-day total occurring Saturday (50 cases). Exposures included household contact, social gathering, worksite, health care worker, K-12 and college.

The state reports several outbreaks at local K-12 schools. In its weekly report, posted Monday, Oct. 4, current outbreaks include Crossroads Charter Academy in Big Rapids, and Evart high and middle schools. Both school districts reopened Oct. 4, after more than a week of virtual instruction.

Cases of COVID-19 have been reported in all six school districts in the Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District since the 2021-22 school year began, forcing many schools to temporarily close buildings and move to virtual instruction.

At the college level, Ferris State reported 19 active cases, as of Monday, Oct. 4. According to daily reports, the university had 20 new cases between Monday, Sept. 27, and Friday Oct. 1, along with five new cases Monday, Oct. 4.

Area hospitals report nearly full bed occupancy for COVID-19 patients. As of Monday, Oct. 4, Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital had 11 COVID-19 patients and four COVID-19 patients in ICU, filling 85% of its beds. Gerber Memorial Hospital in Fremont had 69% of beds filled, and United Hospital in Greenville had 62% filled, according to michigan.gov/coronavirus.

All 83 counties in Michigan have high levels of community transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's COVID Data Tracker. The community transmission level is based on the case rate and the positivity rate for that particular county.

Case rate is determined by the number of new cases per 100,000 people in a seven-day period. Positivity rate is the percentage of positive Nucleic Acid Amplification tests in a seven-day period, in this case.

Here is the latest data from the CDC's COVID Data Tracker for area counties, as of Tuesday, Oct 5:

• Mecosta County: High community transmission level with 179 cases (411.94 case rate), 11 hospital admissions and a positivity rate of 19.66%.

• Osceola County: High community transmission level with 136 cases (579.71 case rate) and a positivity rate of 25%.

• Lake County: High community transmission level with 29 cases ( 244.66 case rate) and a positivity rate of 16.56%.

• Newaygo County: High community transmission level with 274 cases (559.41 case rate), nine hospital admissions and a positivity rate of 20.99%.

• Isabella County: High community transmission level with 353 cases (505.21 case rate), 12 hospital admissions and a positivity rate of 10.35%.

• Wexford County: High community transmission level with 117 cases (347.89 case rate), 13 hospital admissions and a positivity rate of 15.65%.
