On Thursday, July 1, the Delphy Innovative Soft Fruit Centre (ISFC) opened in the Netherlands. More than 100 guests, interested parties, and project partners got to see these latest cultivation facilities on the Berry Briljant site.
Were it up to Delphy, this new research center would become the new international soft fruit hotspot. They searched for a good location for this center for years. First in [the province of] West Brabant. Then in 2018, the Berry Briljant Foundation decided to revamp the Strawberry Land themepark. Not much later, Delphy too was drawn to the area.

The first trials have already begun.
Living room
And it was a good decision. There's now a 3,000 m2 greenhouse, and 1,000 m2 each of racks and a tray field. These are ready for all kinds of high and mid-tech substrate soft fruit farming studies.
Delphy wants the center to bridge the gap between research and practice. That's according to Bart Jongenelen, the ISFC's manager. The ISFC must also become the sector's 'living room'.

Events
Delphy hopes to attract 500+ visitors, including from overseas, to events at the center twice a year. Smaller knowledge events will offer people the chance to network and go more in-depth.
In recent years, Delphy has already succeeded in doing so at Berry Plaza meetings. Last year, too, during the pandemic, growers and suppliers continued to attend these. This is expected to continue at the new ISFC.
Delphy also hopes to attract even more innovation partners. There are nine now, mainly from the technology sector. But Bart hopes plant breeders, growers, and propagators will follow.

Not done
Building the ISFC doesn't mean the area's development is complete. Marcel Dings is a grower and Berry Briljant's chairman. This foundation promotes soft fruit and is developing the region. He says there are still plenty of plans in the pipeline. The foundation wants to renovate the theme park's buildings. And see if more can be done by changing the zoning plans.
One thing's sure - people would do well to see what's happening at 3 Kreuzelweg in [the Dutch village of] Horst. If it's not construction activity, it might be a Strawberry Drive-In. This attracted many people during the pandemic.
