Just a couple of weeks ago, Birmingham police issued a plea to the public for help in solving a decade-old murder.
That plea was answered, and on Wednesday a suspect was charged in the Feb. 10, 2010 shooting death of 47-year-old Jeffrey Deon Wormley. The Birmingham man was shot when he opened the door to his killer.
Antonio Devon Coleman, 34, is charged with capital murder during a burglary. He was transferred Wednesday from the Birmingham City Jail to the Jefferson County Jail where he was formally booked in at 2 p.m.
With Coleman behind bars, Wormley’s family finally got the news for which they’ve been praying. “I started screaming,’' said Stephanie Worley Davis, the victim’s sister. “I didn’t know what to do.”
“It means a lot to us,’' she said. “We’ll never get closure, but it will help us move forward.
The shooting happened about 1:20 p.m. that day at 3428 Willard Avenue S.W. When West Precinct officers arrived, they found Wormley lying on his back just inside the front door of his home.
Investigators believe he was shot sometime the previous night. A neighbor told police and family members she heard gunfire. She looked out and saw somebody walking down the steps to the home and later walking toward Wilson Road. That was about as detailed as the eye-witness account got.
Wormely was raised in the house in which he died. He graduated from Wenonah High School, where he played football, and after graduation worked at various jobs. The father of three grown children - a daughter and two sons - Wormley was living in the family home on Willard Ave.
In a 2013 interview, Davis said her brother “wouldn’t have hurt a flea.” “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about him,’' she said then. “He will never be forgotten, but an arrest would help us move on a little.”
Homicide officials at the time said they had an idea who killed Wormley but did not yet have what they needed to prove it. “He was the prime suspect from Day 1,’' Davis said Wednesday. “The good thing is right always wins in the end. Whatever you do in the dark always comes to light.”
Earlier this month, Birmingham police asked the public to come forward with information in the case. Someone did, and finally gave detectives what they needed to make an arrest. Investigators said the suspect and the victim knew each other. They have not said what led to the deadly shooting.
Davis praised Birmingham homicide Det. Jonathan Ross, who she said took over the case and never gave up. “We are forever grateful to him,’' she said.
Wormley’s mother’s health began to fail after his murder and she died just a few months ago. “Maybe she’ll see him in Heaven and let him know someone is finally being brought to justice,’' Davis said.
Court records show Coleman pleaded guilty in 2016 to discharging a gun into an unoccupied building or vehicle. He received a 120-month suspended sentence. In 2017, he pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and received a 10-year suspended sentence.
Coleman is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.
