A 41-year-old Michigan woman was charged Friday with the murders of her newborn twin sons, who were found dead in a trash bin in 2003 in southwest suburban Stickney Township.

Antoinette Briley, of Holland, Michigan, faces two counts of first-degree murder, the Cook County sheriff’s office announced Saturday.

Antoinette Briley, 41 of Holland, Michigan, was charged Dec. 3, 2020, in the 2003 double murder of her infant twin sons.

The then-unidentified twins were found June 6, 2003, by a waste management employee emptying the trash bins in an alley in the 4800 block of South Latrobe Avenue in unincorporated Stickney Township, officials said.

An autopsy found the boys had been born alive and died of asphyxiation, officials said. Their deaths were ruled homicides.

Officers reopened the case in 2018, using DNA evidence and new developments in genetic genealogy to identify Briley as the boys’ potential birth mother, officials said.

Detectives went to Holland, Michigan, spotted her smoking a cigarette, and then retrieved the butt for a sample of her DNA — which ended up matching that of the twin boys, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officers learned that Briley was in Cook County Thursday and took her into custody during a traffic stop in Oak Lawn that day, officials said.

She was due for a bail hearing Saturday afternoon, officials said.
