A newlywed has taken to TikTok to share what happens when brides don’t master the “soft smile” before their wedding day, and the toothy footage has people cracking up — and calling for more genuine joy in photographs.
Phoebe Batteson-Brown (@scaredy_cat_lady) gained over 800,000 views, 50,000 likes and 2,500 comments when she uploaded her wedding photos to her account.
While we’ve seen shocking wedding photos go viral in the past — like the bride who noticed something “off” after zooming in on photos of her new husband and bridesmaid — Phoebe’s pictures are sparking an interesting conversation about “aesthetic” versus “authentic” weddings.
Phoebe’s video — captioned “Soft smile who?” — begins with the newlywed looking embarrassed into the camera. “Someone didn’t practice a ‘soft smile’ for their wedding, and [it] shows,” the onscreen text reads.
Phoebe then cuts to her wedding photos, in which she’s exuding open-mouth, crinkled-nose, ear-to-ear joy — nothing like the demure “soft smiles” that social media encourages brides to display.
What is a ‘soft smile’?
According to the Knot, a soft smile is loosely defined as “one in which your lips gently curl at the corners of your mouth, on occasion exposing a slight showing of teeth.”
“In terms of aesthetics, a soft smile appears elegant, even ‘perfect,’ in photographs. This is because it is perceived as gentle without being overly expressive,” they write.
“To many, a soft smile is elusive and mysterious, often requiring practice in front of a mirror, camera or an audience.”
However, even with practice, it seems the soft smile is hard to master — as proven by TikTok user @tayla_broad.
‘Our joy doesn’t need to be dainty or demure’
Despite social media’s preference for the soft smile, many TikTokers shared their love of Phoebe’s authentic joy in all of her photos.
“I’m a wedding photographer and that’s exactly what you want from a bride! Perfect!!!” wrote @davepowell41.
“If this ain’t my wife on our wedding day, I don’t want it,” commented @cajunterminator.
“Soft smiles are dumb! Be the joy!!” wrote @betty_cake.
“You’re smiling with your entire body! It’s the most beautiful thing ever. Congratulations 🥰” commented @connie_hirstamos97.
Others shared their own personal struggles mastering the soft smile.
“OMG IM NOT THE ONLY ONE. I looked like a freakin T-Rex ready to eat someone,” joked @kelsrutledge.
