A 48-year-old man being held in the Westmoreland County Prison without bond in connection with a fatal overdose of a North Huntingdon woman was charged with additional drug-related complaints stemming from his arrest in New Stanton, according to court documents.
Jason A. Lewis, 48, of Boston, was arrested May 3 by North Huntingdon police and county detectives for selling a fatal dose of heroin-fentanyl in connection with the death of Iona J. Runkle, 46, who was discovered dead in her mobile home Jan. 12. Police allege that Runkle and her brother, Forest G. Piper Jr., 49, of West Newton purchased 10 stamp bags of contraband from Lewis in the parking lot of a Sheetz in North Huntingdon prior to her death.
Piper also is charged in his sister’s death.
Last week, authorities found Lewis, who was wanted on a fugitive warrant for Runkle’s death, staying at the Super 8 Motel in New Stanton. Investigators said they found him in possession of 29 stamp bags of heroin and drug paraphernalia.
When Lewis was arrested in a motel room there also was a woman with him, but Lewis claimed the heroin and paraphernalia was his, reported Irvin Shipley, a member of the U.S. Marshal’s office fugitive task force who is also a county sheriff’s deputy, and county Det. Tony Marcocci.
“It’s all mine. She doesn’t use,” Shipley quoted Lewis as telling deputies.
The woman was subsequently released from custody, according to court documents.
Lewis also has pending drug-related charges, including reckless endangerment, filed by Murrysville police in a March 9 overdose incident.
Lewis was arraigned Friday on the additional complaints of manufacturing, delivery and possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Lewis and Piper were arrested after a three-month investigation into Runkle’s death by township police Det. Thomas Harris and Marcocci.
