There was only one new case of the coronavirus reported Saturday in Maui County, according to the state Department of Health.
That case brings the state’s total to 620. There were no new hospitalizations or deaths associated with the virus, and nine more people who previously tested positive have been released from isolation.
The total number of cases released from isolation is now at 541, or 87% of all cases in the islands.
As the number of cases dwindles in the islands, the state and counties are slowly easing restrictions under Gov. David Ige’s stay-at-home order, which is extended until May 31.
On Oahu, some businesses like car dealerships and golf courses were allowed to open Thursday. Parks and certain beaches were opened for people to exercise.
While tourism may not bounce back soon, the local economy could slowly open up throughout May. But that would be dependent on businesses changing how they operate to accommodate social distancing guidelines and the number of cases continuing to stay low.
For some, Hawaii isn’t opening up quick enough. Police arrested three on Friday outside the State Capitol at a rally protesting the stay-at-home orders. There have been similar protests on Kauai.
Meanwhile, Hawaii is getting some new COVID-19 tests.
Hawaii Pacific Health will start testing some of its employees for antibodies to get a better understanding of who may have been exposed to the virus. Clinical Labs Hawaii also began antibody testing.
And the state announced Friday that it received 12 test kits capable of producing results in 15 minutes. Medical systems in the counties of Kauai, Maui and Hawaii received two of those kits each, according to the state’s joint information center.
Oahu will get six of those rapid test kits.
