A second case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Santa Clara County, county health officials announced Sunday afternoon, in an adult woman who recently traveled to Wuhan, China.
The case is not related the the first confirmed local case, announced on Friday, which involved a local man who returned on Jan. 24 from Wuhan, the part of China where the disease originated, according to a news release from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department Sunday.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) informed county officials of the case Sunday morning.
The woman is a visitor to Santa Clara County and came to the area on Jan. 23 to visit family. She has stayed home since arriving, except for two occasions where she sought outpatient medical care, and “has been regularly monitored and was never sick enough to be hospitalized,” according to the news release.
The woman’s family members have also been isolated and have not left their home, according to the county, while the Public Health Department has provided food and other necessary items.
“I understand that people are concerned, but based on what we know today, the risk to general public remains low,” said county Health Officer, Dr. Sara Cody. “A second case is not unexpected. With our large population and the amount of travel to China for both personal and business reasons, we will likely see more cases, including close contacts to our cases.”
The first local case involved a man who never became sick enough to require hospitalization and had contact with few people, according to county officials, but sought outpatient treatment twice. The county is also monitoring that man’s family members and others with whom he came in contact.
The respiratory illness, caused by a novel coronavirus, has been identified by health officials to have originated in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province. Most of the 14,550 confirmed cases of the infection worldwide are in China, where 304 people have died from the virus, according to the Associated Press.
This weekend, the Philippine Health Department confirmed the death of a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan, the first death from the illness outside of China. The man’s 38-year-old female companion, also from Wuhan, has also tested positive for the virus and was hospitalized in isolation in Manila, according to the AP report.
The new confirmed case in Santa Clara County would be the fourth in California and the ninth in the United States.
Symptoms of coronavirus are similar to the flu, and include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath, according to the California Public Health Department. Some patients have experienced mild respiratory illness while others have had more severe cases, and some have died.
People who experience those symptoms and have traveled to China, or had close contact with someone who has traveled to China in the last 14 days, should call ahead before seeking care at a doctor’s office or emergency room.
