There are now 79,339 cases of COVID-19 in 30 countries and 2,619 deaths, according to the latest figures from the World Health Organization. The rapid uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases in Iran, Italy, and South Korea over the weekend sent markets tumbling in premarket trading on Monday over concerns that the outbreak of the new coronavirus would turn into a pandemic. (A pandemic is defined as sustained human-to-human transmission of a disease on at least two continents.) Iran now has 43 cases and eight deaths; Italy has 132 cases and three deaths; and South Korea has 763 cases and seven deaths. In the U.S., there are 35 cases, a tally that includes the 21 people who were repatriated to the U.S. from the Diamond Princess cruise ship and from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak. COVID-19 was first detected in Wuhan in December.
