Mayor Bill de Blasio said it wasn’t a question of "if," but "when" a patient in the city would be tested for the possible first case of the novel coronavirus. It’s a familiar reality now being felt by the staff at Bellevue Hospital.
“We know the spectrum in which this disease exists and it is very frightening, but it is not Ebola,” said de Blasio. “Yet the professionals here at Bellevue handled it head on … If we can get through that, we can get through this.”
Doctors say the patient called 911 late Friday night and came to Bellevue with a fever, cough and runny nose.
All common symptoms this time of year, but two days prior this patient traveled from mainland China to the US.
After ruling out 26 other possible respiratory viruses, the city’s Department of Health placed the patient under investigation for coronavirus.
“This particular situation highlights the fact that all the measures we have put in place with our partners are working the way that they should be working,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot.
Samples are en route to Atlanta, Georgia where the Center for Disease Control will need 36 to 48 hours to determine if it is a confirmed case of the disease.
Doctors say this patient was not visiting family or friends in the US, so risk of contamination to others is low.
“This is an opportunity to remind New Yorkers this is not something you are going to contract in the subway or on the bus and we want New Yorkers to practice everyday precautions that we would normally share this time of year,“ Dr. Oxiris Barbot.
The patient is under 40 years old and is in stable condition, receiving supportive care since there is no treatment for the virus.
The hospital says it is taking every precaution to keep staff and other patients safe.
Health officials continue to urge anyone who had traveled to China over the last two weeks and feels any kind of sickness to seek medical care immediately.
“I have to emphasis immediately. That is how we ensure each individual gets the help they need and this problem does not spread,” de Blasio said.
The city says it is working with the CDC on getting the equipment needed to test for coronavirus at the city lab so that these samples do not have to be sent out and results can be found more easily.
