University School turfing case cracked: Hunting Valley Police Blotter - cleveland.com

HUNTING VALLEY, Ohio

Criminal mischief: SOM Center Road

After University School officials reported that turf on their athletic fields had been badly damaged overnight on Sept.5, police used campus security video and village Flock cameras to locate the suspect, 18, a U.S. graduate from Cleveland Heights.

After reviewing the footage, police on Sept. 9 contacted the owner of the Ford Ranger, who was initially upset, saying he had never even been in Hunting Valley. Then he said his son, the U.S. grad, was in college now but was back in town and driving the truck at the time of the incident. Cameras showed the truck had entered school grounds at 12:41 a.m. and left about 10 minutes later.

He later told police that he had just called his son, who admitted that he drove the truck through some trails in the athletic fields. But the father was unaware of the extent of the damage, which included doughnuts and turfing of the fields. He apologized and said they would make things right with the school.

Contact information was turned over to school officials, who planned to assess the damage and the video to determine if they want to pursue charges or handle the matter in-house with the family.

Personal welfare: Fairmount Boulevard

A Mayfield Heights woman reported around 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 that she had dropped her husband, 84, off earlier at Squire Valleevue Farms to walk on the trails and now he was calling to say that he was lost in the woods.

Dispatch reached him on his cell phone and he said he was OK but lost and confused. Firefighters and Case Western Reserve University staff checked the main walking paths with no luck. But his cell phone signal was tracked by firefighters, who placed him closer to Valley Ridge Farm Drive, where search parties located him in the woods to the west shortly after 2 p.m.

He was unharmed after an estimated three or more hours in the woods and returned to his wife. Calls for a drone team and the Ohio Search Dog Association were cancelled.

Road closure: Chagrin River Road

Starting Sept. 7, Chagrin River Road remained closed to all traffic between Fairmount and Shaker boulevards for two months, with a scheduled reopening set for Dec. 7 once a culvert is replaced and a retaining wall is installed.

Detours have been posted and a hard closure will be enforced, the only exception so far back on Sept. 11 for the VeloSano bicycle ride to raise funds for cancer research.
